Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus set a new world record in the 200-meter freestyle at Australia’s Olympic swimming trials on Wednesday, surpassing compatriot and teammate Mollie O’Callaghan in a thrilling race.
Titmus, the reigning Olympic champion in the 200m and 400m freestyle, clocked a time of 1:52.23 in Brisbane, beating O’Callaghan’s previous world record of 1:52.85 set at last year’s world championships. O’Callaghan, who finished second, also surpassed her own record with a time of 1:52.48.
“Looking at the results, that’s unbelievable,” Titmus said post-race. “I’m just happy to finally produce a swim in the 200 that I feel like my training reflects. The field that we have is why we’re swimming so fast, we push each other every day.”
Both Titmus and O’Callaghan train under coach Dean Boxall at St Peters Western Swim Club. Their rivalry is expected to continue at the Paris Olympics, beginning July 26.
With this performance, Titmus is poised to hold both the 200m and 400m freestyle world records, pending ratification of her latest achievement.
